About our History
St. Stephen's Church, Kidderpore welcomes all individuals seeking God’s love. We keep our doors open to every soul seeking to welcome Jesus into their hearts. We invite you to open your heart and allow His grace to penetrate into your soul.
Our church stands as a beacon of hope with its unique rocket-like steeple. St. Stephen’s Church attracts the attention of even the casual passerby. Strangely the steeple was not meant to be designed like a rocket. In fact, it was designed as a ship’s lantern.
With the Kidderpore ports just a stone throw away no wonder the church had a steeple shaped like a ship's lantern and the area was once thronged with seafaring people from all over the world.
The foundation stone of this Anglican church was laid on 6 January 1844 by the Governor-General along with the Venerable Archdeacon Rev. Thomas.
St. Stephen’s Church was opened to the public in 1846 and it is believed that church had been the place of worship for the Governor-General, when he stayed in Belvedere, which is now the National Library.
In 1848, it was established as a Chaplaincy and in 1870 it became a Parish Church.​

Blast from the Past
The memories of 1844 at St. Stephen’s Church, Kidderpore, shimmer like sacred echoes from a bygone age, when the seamen’s Church stood as a beacon beside the port, its elegant interior already adorned with stained glass above the altar, the ancient pipe organ breathing forth solemn hymns, and the marble pulpit proclaiming the Word with dignity. The walls, inscribed with plaques commemorating those who perished at sea, bore silent witness to the faith and courage of generations who sought refuge within its sanctuary. From the vantage of Kidderpore Bridge, the Church’s silhouette was a symbol of hope and constancy, while within its hallowed halls, prayers rose like incense, weaving together the lives of sailors, families, and Clergy into a tapestry of devotion. To recall 1844 is to touch the living heritage of St. Stephen’s Church—a year when its presence was already deeply rooted in the rhythms of the river, the port, and the people, embodying both the fragility of human life and the enduring strength of divine grace.
